Muladhara Chakra – Sanskrit Meaning – Root, Base or Support

Muladhara Chakra is located in the perineum (between the anus and genitals) in the male body and at the posterior part of cervix in the female body – where the vagina meets the cervix.

Muladhara Chakra is seen as beautiful bright red lotus flower with 4 petals. The elemental quality of this chakra is earth, signifying stability, solidity, grounding and weight.  Muladhara Chakra  is considered the lowest Chakra in mankind’s development but the highest in the animal kingdom.  It is where the Kundalini serpent energy lies to start her journey upwards towards Sahasrara Chakra and it is where we start our journey upwards in life for our human awareness to blossom.  Muladhara Chakra is the centre for our basic survival needs and instincts.

The animal associated to Muladhara Chakra is an elephant with 4 trunks. This animal represents strength and stability, will charge through blockages, gives protection, never forgets, loves closeness and social contact.

The Elemental Quality of Earth in Muladhara Chakra

The attribute of the earth element in the physical body is the solidity in the cellular structure of bone and other organs to create weight and density.  It is also our connection to the earth and our family. Balanced earth energy in a person can be seen as being grounded, practical, reliable, and secure; a person that gets things done.  We have all heard the saying that someone is “down to earth” or “without any airs or graces”.  Being grounded is also about drawing energy from the earth and Muladhara Chakra can be seen to act like a pump that transmits earth energy.  This energy being drawn up through our feet and legs to the entire body for balance and stability in order for us to “stand on our own two feet” and “stand up for ourselves in life” for what we believe in.  With a balanced earth energy we can move forward in life, let go of any tensions and fears, have a sense of direction and know why we are here and feel connected to all things.

If the earth energy becomes unbalanced, fear, rigidity and tensions can set in. Possessiveness, controlling aspects arise and money and status can become dominant. We can feel disorganised, unbalanced,  have no direction in life, lack self-confidence, overeat, have addictive tendencies, feel like we don’t belong anywhere or feel totally stuck in the mud and are unable to move forward.

The parts of the body linked to Muladhara Chakra are the bones, and organ of action is the Anus for excretion.  The sensory organ is the nose for smell.
